There is no one best way to prevent cavities nor a single best dental plaque remover. Since there’s no “magic bullet” solution, the best holistic approach is a combination of good dental habits and the proper use of the best dental tools.

Keeping food particles out of your mouth will help prevent cavities, which are caused by bacteria in your mouth eating your food and releasing acidic by-products that corrode the protective enamel coating your teeth. Let’s face it, your mouth is full of bacteria, even if you use an anti-bacterial rinse. You want to maintain that strong barrier that healthy teeth and gums provide to prevent bacteria and viruses from entering your bloodstream and therefore making you sick.
How to maintain optimal dental health
Floss. After eating any food that you feel has left particles lodged between your teeth, you must floss. Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Deep Clean Floss is the best dental floss that I have found which easily slides between the tight spaces between my teeth without shredding (and I have tight spaces between my teeth!). Also, I highly recommend keeping Oral-B Complete Glide Dental Floss Picks with Scope Outlast accessible, which will enable you to floss even if you only have one hand available. Trust, me — you will LOVE these, especially if you are a multi-tasker like me! To clean braces properly or to clean under a dental bridge, then Oral-B Super Floss Mint Dental Floss is for you. Note: Super Floss is the only product I recommend that I do not use (because I don’t have braces nor a bridge), but my Mom uses it daily.
Water. After eating or drinking any beverage containing carbohydrates (including alcoholic beverages), simply swish and rinse your mouth with water to remove these food particles or sugars that your mouth’s bacteria will eat if you don’t.
Anti-Plaque Pre-Brushing Dental Rinse. The best dental rinse before brushing helps loosen and remove plaque so that brushing achieves much more thorough results. Twice daily, before I brush, I use Plax Advanced Formula Plaque-Loosening pre-brushing dental rinse; it not only helps with brushing, but also with flossing in those hard-to-get areas.
Brush. Twice daily, once in the morning, and at bedtime, using a pea-sized amount of the toothpaste of your choice. Regardless of the type of brush you use, you want to use soft bristle toothbrushes, because hard and even medium bristle brushes tend to facilitate receding gum lines, especially with those who tend to brush harder. Your gums will recede with age anyway (hence the old adage, “Long in the Tooth” — your teeth appear longer over time because your roots become exposed), so why catalyze the process? Prior to 2011, I had tried dozens of manual brushes and even an electric brush. In 2011, during a dental exam, a dentist informed me that the most effective toothbrush in his opinion was the rechargeable, electric Philips Sonicare DiamondClean brush. Philips advertises that it results in up to 10 times more plaque removal than a manual brush, and I would say that coupled with Plax and thorough brushing, even more. I purchased one and have used it ever since then, with commendable results (no new fillings!), and it is a consistently top-rated electric toothbrush by numerous sources.
Toothpaste. Sensodyne brand has been recommended to me more than any other brand by dental professionals whenever my teeth are sensitive. In my opinion, Sensodyne ProNamel Gentle Whitening is the best toothpaste for coffee drinkers and has proven highly effective for and is top-ranked by nearly 1,200 Amazon.com customers at the time of this writing.
Anti-Cavity Rinse. After you brush, give your mouth a final cleansing flush with ACT Anticavity Fluoride Rinse or Listerine Total Care Fresh Mint with fluoride. If you use an Anti-Cavity Rinse after brushing, do not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes for maximum protection. If you choose not to use an Anti-Cavity Rinse, then do not rinse out the toothpaste from your mouth with water. Simply spit out the toothpaste, and refrain from eating or drinking for the next 30 minutes.
Avoid Tobacco products. We’ve all seen those TV commercials or disgusting posters that show the effects. Simply avoid tobacco.
